Even the ads are vaguely enticing, offering temptations.

Nations talk in secret to halt piracy

Behind a veil of secrecy, the United States, the European Union, Japan and other
countries are forging ahead with plans to coordinate an international crackdown on illegally copied music, movies, designer bags and other goods that change hands in sidewalk souks and Internet bazaars.

Negotiators, under intense pressure from media companies, luxury brands and other corporate victims of piracy, are scrambling to complete a so-called Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement by the end of the year. But the process is running into growing criticism from Internet campaigners, lawmakers and even some people involved in it.

After the most recent round of negotiations, which took place late last month in Guadalajara, Mexico, news of disagreements has been trickling out, despite an official vow of silence from the participants, which has itself become a main source of friction.

E.U. negotiators, for example, are said to have balked at a U.S.-backed proposal to require Internet service providers to take tough steps against digital piracy.Under such a structure, leaked papers from the Union show, Internet providers might be required to filter out illegally copied songs and films from their networks or to sever copyright violators’ Internet connections.

Many nations are said to have drafted alternatives to the U.S.-backed proposal.

‘‘Our system allows for flexibility,’’ said one person with knowledge of the E.U. position, who insisted on anonymity because of nondisclosure agreements governing the talks. ‘‘The E.U.

cannot accept an agreement that mandates a single solution.’’ Within Europe, different countries have pursued a range of approaches to dealing with Internet piracy. Last year, France approved a so-called threestrikes system, under which illegal filesharers who ignored two warnings to quit could face the loss of Internet access.

Britain has proposed similar legislation.

But German and Swedish officials have ruled out such measures, and politicians elsewhere in Europe have sought to enshrine Internet access as a fundamental human right.

Though the talks have been going on for two years, texts of the proposed deal have been sealed from public view.

Critics say the lack of transparency is highly unusual for a trade agreement with somany parties involved, especially since the deal could influence the workings of the Internet and affect hundreds of millions of people around the world.

‘‘You’d think it was nuclear weapons kind of stuff, not intellectual property law,’’ said Eddan Katz, international affairs director at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which campaigns against regulation of the Internet. ‘‘The fact that there are 30 or 50 people sitting around a table deciding the laws of theworld’s nations, when there are major areas of disagreement, seems like a wholesale contravention of the democratic process.’’ Lawmakers have also largely been kept out of the loop.

In the United States last month, Senator Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, wrote to Ron Kirk, the country’s trade representative, whose office is negotiating on behalf of the United States, to seek information about the negotiations.

In Britain, members of the three main political parties have signed a parliamentary motion calling on their government to release details. National lawmakers elsewhere in Europe, and at the European Parliament, have also demanded greater openness.

Even some participants want to ease the secrecy that surrounds the process.

‘‘The Swedish government believes that we should release a consolidated text as soon as possible,’’ said Stefan Johansson, a Swedish Justice Ministry official who has been involved in the talks.

After the latest round in Mexico, the participants issued only a blandcommuniqué saying, among other things, that the negotiations had been ‘‘productive’’ and had ‘‘focused on civil enforcement, border enforcement and enforcement of rights in the digital environment.’’ The person with knowledge of the talks said one idea under consideration would be to invite groups with concerns to meet on the sidelines of the next round, scheduled for Wellington in April.

Despite the haze surrounding the proposed agreement, some of the most alarmist speculation appears to have been exaggerated. For example, several people with knowledge of the talks said there was no truth to one early rumor— that the accord would empower customs officials to search digital music players for illegally copied songs at border crossings.

Business groups say fears have been fanned by people with a vested interest in weakening copyright protection in the proposed Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, or ACTA. They say greater international coordination is needed to protect businesses that rely on creativity, brand names and other easily copied assets, particularly in export markets.

‘‘Given the importance of this agreement to our economy and to consumers, we must not allow ACTA to be derailed by a minority opposed to protecting the rights of artists, inventors and entrepreneurs,’’ Mark T. Esper, executive vice president of the Global Intellectual Property Center, an affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, said in a statement.

Critics of the process say that if protecting industrialized countries’ economies is the goal, the talks ought to include developing countries like China, India and Indonesia, where intellectual property laws or enforcement are sometimes weaker. In addition to the United States, the European Union and Japan, the parties to the talks areAustralia, Canada, South Korea, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, Singapore and Switzerland.

‘‘Some might see it as an anti-counterfeiting deal without the counterfeiters,’’ said Michael Geist, a lawprofessor at the University of Ottawa who has been mustering critics of the negotiations via his blog.

Portions of the negotiations dealing with the Internet have attracted more attention than proposals for cracking down on piracy of physical goods and other trademark violations.

In an interview withWorld Trademark Review, a trade journal, the assistant U.S. trade representative for intellectual property and innovation, Stan McCoy, lamented what he called a ‘‘misperception that this agreement will focus mostly or exclusively on copyright infringement in the digital environment.’’ ‘‘The threat of physical goods bearing counterfeit trademarks is a real one, and it is a priority for ACTA,’’ Mr. Mc- Coy said. ‘‘Americans do not want to brush their teeth with counterfeit toothpaste or drive a car with knockoff brakes.’’ His office did not respond to requests for elaboration on the U.S. position.

One supporter of the talks, the Motion Picture Association of America, is urging U.S. negotiators not to back down on proposals for fighting the unauthorized digital copying of movies.

‘‘Internet piracy has emerged as the fastest-growing threat to the filmed entertainment industry,’’ Dan Glickman, chief executive of the association, said in a recent letter to Senator Patrick J.

Leahy, the Vermont Democratwhois the chairman of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. ‘‘M.P.A.A. firmly believes that a strong ACTA should address this challenge, raising the level and effectiveness of copyright enforcement in the digital and online marketplaces.’’

Ohio Strip Club Offering Lap Dances For Haiti

TOLEDO, Ohio - A strip club in Ohio is hoping patrons will donate money to Haiti relief efforts by accepting lap dances from its employees.

This Saturday, Toledo-based Marilyn’s Club will donate 100% of money raised from lap dances to a yet-to-be-determined charity with the hopes of benefiting Haitian earthquake relief efforts.

“Just like everyone, our hearts went out to all the victims in Haiti,” Marilyn’s club manager Kenny Sporano told FOX affiliate WUPW.

Though some have raised some concern about the idea, Sporano said it shouldn’t matter where the money comes from, just that it goes to the right causes.

“A charity is a charity,” Sporano said. “If you need the money, who is to say who should judge who and where it comes from?”

Linda Greene, a spokesperson for the Christian-based International Service of Hope, agrees with Sporano.

“I think it’s a great idea,” Greene commented. “We don’t have the right to judge a person’s heart, and if somebody is doing something they have to do for a living then that’s the way it is.”

International Service of Hope has already sent thirteen containers of relief supplies to Haiti, and each one costs more than $5,000 to ship. With a cost that high, it’s hard to be picky about where charitable funds come from.

Why I Had to Stop Making Hardcore Porn

As a director of heterosexual porn, I came to learn that while my overt task was to make sure the girls got naked, my true responsibility was to make sure the girls got punished.

When I was in my early 20s, I made my living as a pornographer. For more than five years, my working life revolved around framing acts of public copulation. I’ve pushed cameras and microphones into dwellings no machines should ever go. I’ve been granted a front-row seat to scenes of startling intimacy. I’ve helped pick up thousands of used baby-wipes. Somewhere along the line, I gained a financial stability that, in light of the rather limited artistic scope of the movies I helped produce, I probably didn’t deserve.

But after half a decade of the sex grind, I decided to call it quits. For despite having entered the smut leagues with the very best of intentions, the vast majority of the porn I ended up shooting was not “sex-positive” in character. Instead, the sex I found myself videotaping was of the Gonzo variety: the kind of scenes that are harshly lit, reek of a basement in the San Fernando Valley, and inevitably wind up devoured and forgotten in 15 minutes. If my “career” as a director is notable in any way, it’s that I’ve played for both sides—which is to say, while I’ve shot hundreds of hetero scenes, I’ve shot almost as many in gay porn.

We Have to Give Them What They Want

Though gay and straight porn may appear distinct from one another mostly due to the various orifices which receive the majority of the camera’s gaze, for me, the most important difference was that they felt governed by subtly different moral tenets.

Let’s begin with straight porn; for that’s where I began. I got into porn as a horny 23-year-old Jewish kid, hoping to stare at and hopefully score with curvy women who didn’t see a roll in the hay as too absurd a way to make their rent. Perhaps I was blessed with an excessively literal mind, but I quite simply imagined that the best way for me to live out my sexual fantasies was to, well, join the sex industry itself. It was not to be so simple, I soon discovered: many a man had shared my same dream. A good job was hard to come by, but after months of crushing disappointments, I finally landed a mildly lucrative gig shooting camera for a website. Understandably, I was psyched.

But in due time, I came to learn that within the context of the heterosexual L.A. industry, while my overt task at hand was to make sure that the girls got naked, my true responsibility as director was to make sure the girls got punished. Scenes that stuck out, and hence made more money, were those in which the female “targets” were verbally degraded and sometimes physically humiliated.

None of it was written in my contract, of course; it was more of a contextual thing. Like: Everyone’s doing it . . . thus, so shall we. My various superiors across the years saw the issue from a businessman’s perspective, reminding me quite openly of the need to keep up with our competition. Anabolic’s getting nasty? Then we need to be nastier. Another one of their gambits was “We owe it our viewers.” We have to give them what they want! (And what do “they” want? Scenes of degradation, of course. Gloryholes and gang-bangs. The facial cumshot became de riguer sometime in the 1980s, but by the 2000s, you literally had to do it in every scene or risk not collecting your paycheck.)

What surprised me most though, was the fact that I found within myself a happy willingness to be violent, a willingness to degrade. Though my bosses may have ordered me to organize and record the scenes of degradation, I followed their orders, and not without pleasure. Something cowardly within me, an internal space, suffused with a weak kind of anger, felt satisfied when I saw a woman “take her punishment.” I clung to the sense of temporary empowerment I found through the bullying. Lust-colored aggression and the satisfaction of making “good money” guided me through scene after scene.

Of course, all participants in porno are complicit, both the bottoms and tops. Both genders willingly participate in heterosexual porn, and to some extent, both are marginalized: I was literally ordered not to film men above the waist if I could help it. And while men do make up the majority of porn’s audience, women watch heterosexual porn, too—quite a few likely doing so with major outrage or dissatisfaction. Still, though, straight porn unarguably continues to be the untrammeled domain of male fantasy.

But none of this is too enlightening. After all, we’ve all seen “bad” porn, hateful porn, and I think most have a basic sense of where it comes from. Men get bummed when they can’t get sex. They feel ashamed when they turn to porn for release. Hate and disappointment is released along with their libidos. Disappointment and disrespect washes over the sex workers. It infects the camera crew.

The point at which this treatise becomes useful, however, is when we take a closer look at gay porn—which is precisely what I had to do, midway through my journey through porn.

The Zen of Gay Porn

After three years of shooting, I’d disowned the Gonzo world. I had just seen too much. It had taken a toll on me, in the form of broken relationships, guilt, and regrettable behavior. I concluded that my life would be a hell of a lot sunnier if I could stop collecting money for videotaping women getting crushed before my eyes, and I simply removed myself from the arena. I applied to graduate school and eventually got in. I studied, talked a lot in class, and loved it. But I was poor. I was really, really poor.

So I called my last boss up, rather shamefacedly, and asked him for my job back. “I don’t have it anymore,” he said, “but we’re starting a new site. Would you be okay with shooting gay?”

For a moment I considered. I had never seen two guys go at it before, and at first the idea didn’t appeal to me. Though I thought of myself as very open-minded, for some reason the idea of filming male sex ad infinitum, from a first-row seat, depressed me. Perhaps I still envisioned my foray into porn as a type of sexual wish-fulfillment: with nothing to gain in terms of conquest, these scenes may have lost a bit of their luster. Or maybe it’s more honest to say that I was simply scared.

In the end, it didn’t matter: my desire for the easy paycheck won out, and I took the job. And rather quickly, I came to feel happy that I had—morally, it was another world entirely. The scenarios were still contrived, I admit, and the orgasms were half-hearted, if they came at all. I employed plenty of guys who were there for the money, make no mistake about it; and without exception, the production values stayed amateur. But the shame, rage, and sexual violence that I had come to associate with porn was almost completely absent. That meant something.

Gay porn, in fact, was so goddamn simple that it approached a type of Zen beauty. I mean, this was guys taking on guys, in every shape and form imaginable, for the most part in good humor and absent-minded lust. They may have stuck to roles of “tops” and “bottoms,” but in the dressing room, we all seemed equals, on the same team. Everyone laughed at me for being a straight guy shooting gay porn. Some tried to entice me to jump in front of the camera for kicks. But we all laughed about it. We all seemed like friends. The sadness and the degradation I had come to associate with my job, with videotaped sex for money, was suddenly absent.

But I’m saddened to think that the only path to the absence of hostility and anger in porn is to remove women from the equation. It doesn’t bode well, especially for a world in which men and women must continue to co-exist. In the first half of my porn-life, I lived inside of a world where it almost seemed like an entire gender was being denigrated, like that was the whole point—where very young women were choked and slapped and written-on with lipstick, simply for the crime, it seemed, of being a woman. You should have slept with me, seemed to be the unspoken message. Now see what I have to do to you.

Choosing the Photograph

The semiotician Susan Sontag writes that, “Photography is essentially an act of non-intervention.” She references the famous photograph of a Vietnamese child, running down a road, her back burned from napalm: “Part of the horror of such journalistic coups of contemporary photojournalism . . . comes from the awareness of how plausible it has become, in situations where the photographer has the choice between a photograph and life, to choose the photograph.” Every day, I saw people in pain. And yet, I always chose the photograph.

Even so, I don’t regret my decision to work in porn. I regret how I acted within it, and wish that I had been driven more frequently by compassion than instinctive cruelty. But on its most basic level, pornography is neither evil nor noble. It is a sexual means to a solitary end, and for most, porn simply represents a harmless way to spend a half-hour: a bit of lust-inspired drivel that, done right, can serve a very practical purpose.

Moreover, within the world of heterosexual pornography, it’s clear that not every scene is degrading. Some are directed by women, others by alt-porn types who fancy a pink mohawk and maybe a bit of plot more so than your average everyday, run-of-the-mill gangbang; many films, happily, are simply produced by people who don’t seem propelled by anger. Some are just plain damn sexy.

At its worst, though, porn can represent with shocking clarity the inability of a modern society to empathize. We are living in an increasingly individualistic, over-privatized, fragmented society, and it’s not going to get any better any time soon. Perhaps the character of our generation will be judged in how we react to the images that run before us on our screens: do we wish for the objects of our desire to be punished, humiliated? Or treated with respect? The answer is in our collective consciousness. It is up to us.

Chinese government launches crackdown against online porn industry

Beijing, Feb. 6 (ANI): In a latest crackdown against online porn industry, China has reinforced its arsenal of laws that will go into effect today.

In a joint statement released on Friday, the Supreme People’s Court and the Supreme People’s Procuratorate said that the new rule would target wireless carriers, along with advertisers, advertising agents, third-party payment platforms and websites if they are found to be involved in the porn business for profits.

The second judicial interpretation concerning online porn was intended to serve as a supplement to its predecessor released in September 2004, as porn has crept into cell phones with access to the Internet, China Daily reports.

The first interpretation had only put the end link of the interest chain - the websites - under its sway.

The other four links involved in the online porn business will have to scramble for any evidence in their favour if they try to prove that they were unaware of the porn content on the websites.

However, a single complaint from any netizen could foil the attempt, according to the rule’s definition of awareness.

The rule also enhances the protection for teenagers younger than 14 by cutting the conviction threshold in half from the first judicial interpretation.

For instance, as few as 10 video clips verified as porn depicting such teenagers will carry the sentence of making, copying, publishing, selling and circulating porn articles for making profits, according to the rule.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the number of Chinese netizens using cell phones to log online has surged to 233 million as of the end of last year and Chinese Internet users have increased more than four times to 384 million in the past five years.

Adult Industry Uses Vobile To Fight Online Piracy

The Free Speech Coalition, a trade association representing members of the adult film industry, will be introducing its new anti-piracy program this week in an effort to weed out the number of sites that re-distribute porn content without paying its producers.

The porn industry trade association’s new Anti-Piracy Action Program (APAP) initiative will track content with spidering and fingerprinting software and send DMCA takedown notices to infringing websites. The program will also offer FSC members legal services and will aid in negotiations with third parties to include trailers on their websites for users to purchase full copies of the videos they’re watching, expanding the opportunity for monetization.

The program is going live after a year of testing, and will be powered by fingerprinting and tracking technology from Vobile, the same technology being used to keep infringing content from appearing on Justin.tv. Vobile has been popular in Hollywood, striking partnerships with six studios and three TV networks, all of which feed their content into its comparison database. But a deal with the Free Speech Coalition will add adult videos to the mix, which it will track across numerous third-party sites that re-distribute porn clips without compensating rights holders.

The program is open to all active FSC members, and fees are based on the amount of content that is tracked. As a result, the trade association says even small production companies should be able to participate for a “few hundred dollars a month,” according to the press release. The FSC will introduce the program at this week’s XBIZ trade show in Los Angeles at the Sofitel Hotel in West Hollywood.

It’s not clear how many members will sign up, however, based on the results of an informal survey on the FSC website. The poll found that about 31 percent of respondents believe “nothing can be done” about online piracy. In response to a question about what should be done, 21.5 percent of respondents said legal action should be taken against pirates, 12.7 percent said technology should be developed to combat online theft, and 11.3 percent said that the industry should educate consumers that watching pirated content is wrong. About 23.6 percent of respondents said that the industry should try all three efforts.

McCubbin’s exhibit looks at a driving economic force

Artist Laurenn McCubbin danced nude at the Lusty Lady in San Francisco, designed and illustrated writer Michelle Tea’s call-girl memoir, Rent Girl, and toured with the Sex Workers Art Show.

You’d think there is little to astonish her in the world of sex work, but the MFA student at UNLV was smacked by the idea that sex work is a driving force in our economy and that women are for sale — brought direct-to-your-room — but that it’s “this invisible system that everyone denies is happening and threatens to regulate against.

“The idea is that we want this here because we know that people want this service, but we’re going to punish these people in multiple, humiliating ways,” she says.

How Las Vegas deals with its sex industry is the thrust of McCubbin’s recent work. Speaking to Las Vegas in the Language of Las Vegas, opening February 5 at UNLV’s Grant Hall Gallery, features her renditions of “hooker cards,” illustrated portraits of real sex workers that mimic those distributed on the Strip. Each has a phone number that dials into recordings of women talking about their careers and interests in a matter-of-fact way.

During the Adult Entertainment Expo in January, McCubbin had a crew passing out the cards on the Strip and a rolling billboard advertising the women of vegasladybiz.com. Video and photos of the event will be on at the exhibit, as will a wall of hooker shoes that illustrate the flash and glamour of the object contrasted with examples — attached to the bottom of a shoe — of incident reports and violent acts against sex workers, a portrayal, she says, of the “glamour and reality.”

As with a recent piece, “Economic Flow Chart of the Las Vegas Call Girl,” this exhibit looks at the multiple facets of sex work. McCubbin knows that sex workers run the gamut: educated women in it for the big money, abused men and women with issues, prostitutes who believe that they’re helping others and workers who are drug addicts. Some just like sex and believe they should be paid for their talents.

“What a sex worker is in the minds of America is either Pretty Woman orSecret Diary of a Call Girl or a dead body on CSI,” McCubbin says. “There’s never any middle ground. These are people doing a job. It’s like you or me. And it’s a major part of our economy. They pay rent, they pay for child care, they shop here, tip taxi drivers, limo drivers, valets and casinos. It’s a huge deal.

“It’s larger than people would like to think.”

Jimmy Johnson to be a pitchman for ExtenZe male enhancement product

Jimmy Johnson, former coach of our beloved Dallas Cowboys, is a big man, but apparently not big enough to do go it alone, and has beome a pitchman for late-night direct-response TV advertising product ExtenZe in a new campaign starting Monday. This marks a change in advertising strategy for the product which is supposed to make it more of a mainstream product according to company hopes.

Jimmy Johnson, reported that he is a user ExtenZe, a product billed to increase the size of your johnson, pun definitely intended as it promotes its availability at mass retailers such as Walmart, Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid and GNC.

Mr. Johnson apparently was not the first celebrity pitchman choice for ExtenZe s, but Robert Yallen, CEO of Inter/Media, the Encino, Calif., direct-marketing agency behind the campaign, said the first spokesman returned the check after starting to shoot commercials and getting embarrassed.

Sony laying off 7% of work force

Sony has quantified its latest round of pink slips at 450 layoffs or nearly 7% of the Culver City studio’s worldwide work force of 6,800 employees.

Another 100 open positions will be eliminated. More than half of the layoffs will hit its home-entertainment division and various areas of IT staffing, reflecting a continuing industrywide decline in DVD revenue. Most of the pink slips will affect U.S. employees.

In March, Sony laid off 250 workers and eliminated 100 open positions.

In a video message to employees, Sony Pictures Entertainment co-toppers Michael Lynton and Amy Pascal attributed the moves to a changing entertainment landscape. The duo were unavailable for interviews, but a corporate spokesman provided a partial transcript of their recorded remarks.

“Amy and I have spent a lot of time thinking and talking and worrying about the impact that this has on people,” Lynton said. “We understand that they’re very, very difficult. We also, though, have to look to the future and make sure that the people who we do work with every day have a very good work environment and that the environment that we’ve created collectively, as a studio together, is the best possible one moving forward.”

Added Pascal: “Our industry is affected by two things: It’s affected by the economy, of course, and it’s affected by technology. Over the last two years, it’s changed people’s DVD-buying habits, which has had a huge effect on our company and the industry at large.”

In a letter to employees, the execs said “a new operating model” in home entertainment and IT was behind the job cuts in those areas. Final decisions on where job cuts would be made were pending, but most of those being dismissed will be notified by the first week of March, Lynton and Pascal said.

“The business is going through a rough period of trial and transition, and we have an obligation to take the steps necessary to get through it,” the execs said.

Sony officials also suggested that an increased emphasis on digital-distribution strategies will allow a less labor-intensive approach to home-entertainment releasing.

Several studios announced sizable job cuts early last year, but the Sony move represents the first in 2010. The layoffs news follows a year in which Sony ranked fourth in domestic boxoffice market share, though execs said 2009 represented one of the studio’s most profitable theatrical years ever.

So could we infer from that that the Tea Party and their supporters like Sarah Palin, Tom Tancredo, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, etc, are all against the government intervention in private businesses like strip clubs, adult video stores, etc? In a shocking allegation, a former cocktail waitress at the Penthouse Executive Club claims the managers cultivated an unprofessional atmosphere of sordid sexual degradation. NEW YORK, Feb 5 (Reuters) - Social networking company FriendFinder Networks Inc (FFN.N) indefinitely shelved its planned $220 million initial public offering on Friday, citing market conditions.

FriendFinder runs websites such as BigChurch.com, a site for single Christians, but derives its revenues primarily from its adult-oriented offerings such as AdultFriendFinder.com and Cams.com, according to a prospectus filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The company, which was bought by the publisher of men’s magazine Penthouse for $500 million in 2007, did not say when it might again try to price the IPO, but said in a statement it would not proceed “until market conditions improve.”

FriendFinder intended to sell 20 million shares for between $10 and $20 each and use the proceeds largely to pay down debt. FriendFinder first filed for the IPO in December 2008, and initially sought to raise as much as $460 million.

The IPO, was delayed last week when the SEC said it had questions regarding the offering, and had been set to price this week.

FriendFinder, based in Boca Raton, Florida, reported net revenue of $244.4 million in the nine months ended Sept. 30, up slightly from $243.9 million in the same period a year ago. It reported a net loss of $27.4 million, narrower than its $32.3 million loss a year ago.

RenCap and Ledgemont Capital Markets LLC managed the IPO.

China deputizes mothers to surf for online pornography as part of Beijing Internet crackdown

China unveiled its new secret weapon in the country’s all-out war against Internet pornography - mom.

The Chinese government tapped sixty mothers to form a “Mom jury” tasked with surfing the Web for porn sites that are deemed indecent for young Internet users, the China Daily reported.

Their task will be to ferret out the sites that are potentially offensive and accessible for children - and alert government watchdog agencies to take further action. A pool of 200 more mothers is said to be waiting in the wings to join the indecency hunt.

The move is part of the Chinese government’s campaign to “purify the social environment,” which has led to the shut down and blocking of 15,000 Web sites, the country’s official state news agency, Xinhua, reported.

The campaign, launched on Dec. 8, is expected to be wrapped up by May.

“The flooding lewd information online has seriously harmed the growth of minors, undermined social morality and resulted in crimes,” the Chinese Supreme People’s Court said in a statement released Thursday.

China recently has become more aggressive with its Internet policing policies, and is being accused of backing last month’s hacker attacks on Google’s Chinese-language search engine, which the company says targeted the email accounts of human rights activists. Google is threatening to pull its offices from the country over the cyber-attacks and Web censorship issues.

“Google sets a strong example in standing up to the Chinese government’s continued failure to respect the fundamental human rights of free expression and privacy,” Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin said Wednesday.

Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi tried to calm international criticism over China’s Internet policies during a visit to Paris.

“The Internet in China is completely open and China is one of the most dynamic markets in the field of Internet,” Jiechi told reporters on Wednesday.

Oscar Pirates, Fewer Films Leak Online This Year

The 2010 Oscar nominees were announced yesterday, inspiring many people to fire up their BitTorrent clients. Each year we take a look at the availability of the nominated films online. This year there is a downward trend as only 79% of the films have leaked online in DVD quality.

Waxy’s Andy Baio has been collecting detailed piracy stats for every Oscar-nominated movie since 2003. Much to the delight of the MPAA, his most recent statistics show that, compared to previous years, fewer Oscar nominees have leaked online.

The statistics for all 2010 nominees, except documentary and foreign films, show that 27 of the 34 films were available on BitTorrent in DVD quality last night. Nearly half of the films have leaked as a screener and 10 of those are estimated to be leaked by Academy members.

Although the majority of the Oscar nominees are available online, the movie industry has certainly scored a small victory. Last year all films leaked in one format or another. On another positive note for the MPAA, the median time for films to leak after their US-release date has nearly doubled to 21 days. In 2003 it took only one day for most films to leak onto the Internet.

On the negative side, there were still 4 films that were available online before they they premiered in US movie theaters. In The Loop, The Hurt Locker, The White Ribbon and The Young Victoria all leaked in advance of their official premiere.

The graph below further shows that there are less retail DVD rips available compared to previous years, 44% versus 100% in 2008 and the years before. As Andy also mentions, this figure may go up a little before the official Oscar award ceremony broadcast.

Although this data suggests that the movie industry is becoming more effective in preventing screeners from leaking online, we have to emphasize that more than a third of the leaks originated from deviant Academy members who like to share the work of their colleagues.

The Oscar screener of Avatar was sent out relatively late, only a few weeks ago. Itleaked onto the Internet today and is not included in the graphs above.

Uh, A Surprise: Friendfinder Networks Cancels IPO

Last drinks threatened for lap dancing club

POLICE threatened to shut down a club after the owner stopped providing free drinks and lap dances, a lawyer says.

The Gold Coast club was allegedly put on a “hit list” last year after the proprietor decided to end VIP hospitality for off-duty police.

“He decided enough was enough in terms of free loading coppers,” said the lawyer, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

“He sought our advice after the police suggested they could find ways to have him shut down. He was concerned and had to step up his security as a result.”

The Crime and Misconduct Commission is investigating allegations police have been getting too close to the Gold Coast club scene, including involvement in drug dealing.

Some clubs are known to fete off-duty police with free entry, free drinks and even lap dances.

At least one club is said to provide police with $100 drink cards, with some strip clubs offering officers “special treatment”.

Senior police admit some young officers have been “caught up in the wrong crowd”.

They rub shoulders with bikies who are reputed to control the nightclub drug trade on the Glitter Strip.

Bikie associates have held stakes in Coast clubs and been involved in running security.

“It has absolutely nothing to do with making money out of security and everything to do with the supply of drugs to a ready-made market,” a legal source said.

Last November, authorities ended a two-year operation targeting prominent Gold Coast bikie gang the Finks.

During the operation, run by the Australian Crime Commission and Queensland police, more than 40 people were arrested on 160 charges and in excess of $1 million in drugs, cash and property was seized.

In September, Finks sergeant-at-arms Gregory Keating was jailed for refusing to break his gang’s code of silence, after he declined to answer the ACC’s questions about illegal drug distribution.

Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson this week admitted some police may have been corrupted by the Gold Coast’s “Las Vegas” lifestyle.

PBS “Digital Nation”: Great, But Where’s the Porn?

Last night PBS’s Frontline screened “Digital Nation,” an excellent examination of the consequences of digital culture. It’s all watchable online too. The show’s expert correspondent is Douglas Rushkoff, an early Internet apostle who, like another Internet champion Jaron Lanier, is having second thoughts about what the cybergenie is ushering in now we’ve uncorked its botttle.

In the show, we meet a video-game addicted South Korean teen; and a bunch of college kids who are multitasking whizzes — supposed whizzes, that is, until we learn from a psych experiment that they’re lousy at all the cognitive skills involved. Are we raising a generation of kids (man, their multitasking makes your head spin) who are lacking real analytic skills?

But the show doesn’t address one great elephant in the room:

the devouring presence of digital porn.

Too steamy for public TV? Too bad. What are the social and psychological consequences of having hardcore fantasy-niche porn instantly available? Seems a topic surely worth examining.
