A few amateur but angry campaigners have won a significant battle to stop the sex industry seeping on to the high street.

 

One summer evening I found myself in the bedroom of the owner of a lap-dancing club. I sat primly on a chair, he lounged grim-faced on his grubby counterpane. It was the only place we could hear each other talk, since outside was a large and shouty mob. He hadn’t slept for two nights. Someone had mischievously posted his phone number online in an escort advertisement for a “tall, blonde pole dancer”. This man was a pariah and he knew it.

The neighbourhood didn’t want his club. They loathed walking their kids to school past its sinister, blacked-out windows. Didn’t like to think about the women inside dancing for men’s money — £10 topless, £15 naked — in botched-together booths enclosed in what seemed to be shower curtains. So they’d signed petitions and lobbied their council, which then rejected this man’s application to turn his boozer into a strip joint. But he’d appealed to local magistrates who overrode the council. It was a dire day for local democracy, the case of the people v the pole. Read more

In the latest chapter of the ACORN video scandal, conservative activist James O’Keefe tonight posted footage he secretly recorded this year at the community organizing group’s South Los Angeles office.

In the footage, O’Keefe (posing as a student at USC) and Hannah Giles (pretending to be a prostitute on the run from an abusive pimp in Miami) appear to ask an ACORN employee for assistance finding housing so that they can set up a brothel with underage sex workers. The employee, Lavelle Stewart, isn’t shown objecting to their comments and offers to connect the pair with other organizations that specialize in housing. Read more

 

Stephen Timms, the Treasury secretary, has defended the government’s controversial plans to give ministers sweeping powers to combat online piracy as necessary to “future-proof” its proposals to safeguard the UK’s creative industries.

 

The digital economy bill, published today, introduces a new system to combat online piracy on peer-to-peer sharing services. Persistent unlawful file-sharers will receive warning letters from their internet service providers and if piracy is not reduced by 70%, the government will introduce a series of “technical measures”, which could include temporary account suspension.

 

But the bill also includes a power that allows the secretary of state to amend the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 ”for the purpose of preventing or reducing the infringement of copyright by means of the internet, if it appears to the secretary of state appropriate to do so having regard to technological developments that have occurred or are likely to occur”. An attorney for Roman Polanski said the famed director has been punished enough for having sex with a 13-year-old girl more than three decades ago, offering clues as to how he might fight extradition to the United States.

Herve Temime, in an interview with the French newspaper Le Figaro, said he believes the 42 days that Polanski spend at a California prison for various psychiatric tests back 1978 — before he was scheduled to be sentenced — is punishment enough.

Polanski pleaded guilty to having sex with the girl at Jack Nicholson’s home. But he fled the country before sentencing, convinced, Temime said, that the judge in the case was treating him unfairly. The conduct of the judge was the subject of an HBO documentary. Read more

 

The Pirate Bay made headlines earlier this week with yet another dramatic announcement, this time that the notorious BitTorrent site’s tracker has been officially shut down. But the move won’t impact downloading, site admins explained on a blog. Trackers are no longer needed to facilitate BitTorrent transfers, the blog entry explained, because decentralized extensions of the P2P protocol are mature enough to pick up the tab. “It’s the end of an era, but the era is no longer up2date,” the blog proclaimed.

As always with announcements from the folks at The Pirate Bay, there’s a lot of self-serving smoke and mirrors, mixed with a good amount of hubris. CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - An Isle of Palms author has broken the stripper code of silence with her new book, Stiletto Diaries. For 23 years London Knight danced her way through strip clubs from coast to coast. 

Now retired, Knight has written the book to let all young women know what she claims is the bare naked truth behind the industry.

A Warren man pleaded guilty to one count of tax evasion Thursday in U.S. District Court for concealing 11 years of income from his ownership of several bars and adult entertainment businesses.

Vincent Mavilia, 66, of 19 Cunningham Road, pleaded guilty before Senior U.S. District Judge Alfred V. Covello. Mavilia faces a five-year jail term and a maximum fine of $718,582. He will be sentenced Feb. 23.

According to court documents and statements made in court, Mavilia between 1992 and 2003 took steps to conceal from the Internal Revenue Service his ownership of the businesses and the income he received from them by placing the businesses under the name of his adult daughter. Read more

A rabbi financed a drug-dealing business and offered cocaine to girls in exchange for sex, a court heard.

Rabbi Baruch Chalomish, of Upper Park Road, Salford, rented an apartment where he could “relax and have a party”, Manchester Crown Court heard.

Police raided the Salford flat and discovered a total of 101 grams (3.6oz) of cocaine and more than £17,000.

Chalomish, 54, admits two counts of possessing cocaine but denies two of possession with intent to supply. Read more

 

(RNS) Did alleged Fort Hood shooter Maj. Nidal Hasan lose control, at least in part, because he was sexually frustrated?

That’s one of the questions being asked in the investigation into the Nov. 5 rampage that left 13 people dead and dozens more injured.

According to reports, Hasan visited a nearby strip club in the weeks before the massacre and was frustrated by his inability to find a pious Muslim wife.

That’s sparked a recurring, but still unresolved, debate on whether strict Islamic sexual mores in Muslim communities are contributing to a sense of hopelessness some say drives many young men into religious fanaticism and violence.

Two cousins from Ohio received matching sentences in federal court Thursday for distributing an adult film that government officials deemed obscene.

Sami Harb, 44, and Michael Harb, 36, were indicted in June 2003 on three counts of engaging in a business of selling or transferring obscene material and three counts of mailing obscene material. The charges were tied to three films that were described in court documents as “sadistic and masochistic” and came after an investigation by the FBI’s Obscenity Task Force and the U.S. attorney’s offices in Cleveland and Salt Lake City. A HOTEL has been banned from selling alcohol after allowing a “lurid” striptease act to take place in its bar.
Just hours before the unauthorised adult entertainment took place at the The Fairhaven Hotel on Charnley Road, Blackpool, two 15-year-old girls had been served booze at the premises.

A town hall licensing panel suspended the venue’s drinks licence for three weeks after hearing there had been a number of breaches that also included selling alcohol to non-residents and allowing smoking on the premises.

The hotel has 21 days in which to appeal.
