England — An English teacher will be allowed to return to the classroom despite being caught looking at pornographic websites during lessons and using school telephones to call sex hotlines.

 

Darren Adamson, the head of English at Houghton Kepier School in Houghton le Spring, Tyne and Wear, admitted using school computers to log on to camcandy.com and other sites.A conduct committee of the General Teaching Council (GTC) for England said the case was “particularly serious” but ruled that he could return to teaching.

The 36-year-old, who was sacked by the school, was given a conditional registration order and ordered to produce a psychiatric report on his behaviour before he teaches again.

Parents groups reacted with anger yesterday at the decision.

Margaret Morrissey, spokeswoman for Parents Outloud, said: “It is absolutely unacceptable. Whatever this teacher’s excuses, he knows it should not be done, certainly not on school premises, on school equipment and by a school teacher. This is one of those areas where there is no room for debate.

“If you do this you should know that you will lose your job and end your professional career. There is not a parent in the land who would want this man standing in front of a class.”

The GTC committee had heard how Mr Adamson - who joined Houghton Kepier nine years ago and had been head of English since April 2004 - logged on to the website for “private use”‘ during his lunch hour and occasionally during lessons.

Christine Green, chairman of the GTC committee, said: “Whilst there is no evidence that any pupils had sight of the website, this was a matter of good fortune, and there was clearly a risk that a pupil may have entered a room when such images were on screen.”

She added: “Mr Adamson has failed to maintain appropriate standards of honesty and integrity in the carrying out of his duties to include the unauthorised use of school property.

“He used school facilities for private interests to include school equipment to view pornography.

“In doing so, Mr Adamson has brought the standing and reputation of the teaching profession into serious disrepute.”

The teacher, who did not attend the disciplinary hearing, also admitted using his phone extension to call premium-rate phone numbers associated with the adult website, which involved “considerable expense” to the school.

Mr Adamson’s representative, Terry Bladen, said he had suffered “considerable difficulties and anxiety in his personal life”.

Mr Bladen added: “While he is deeply ashamed of his behaviour, Mr Adamson admits the charge of unacceptable behaviour. He deeply regrets the actions he did, and feels he has let himself and the school down.”
