There’s porn stores, and then there’s the Fairvilla Megastores.  As one of the leading adult retailers in the country, they are clearly doing something right there.  So with that in mind, I sat down with the buyer for Fairvilla Megastores, Jessica Ledford…our November Buyer of the Month.

Nate:  Thanks so much for sitting down with us.  First thing first, how long have you been in the adult industry?

Jessica:  I’ve been in the adult Industry & only with Fairvilla MegaStore for almost 9 years.

Nate:  That’s pretty impressive, almost a decade.  What brought you to being a buyer?

Jessica:  Ever since I entered the world of retail, I’ve always wanted to be a Buyer. I enjoy buying product, turning over a profit & making customers happy.

Nate:  That’s great that you keep your customers in mind when making purchasing decisions.  What do you think are essential qualities or skills that make up a good buyer?

Jessica:  I believe listening to your customers needs & wants create a good buyer. It is important not to make the mistake of only buying product that you like when in reality everyone wants something different and your opinion isn’t the only one that matters.

Nate:  That’s the way to do it!  One of the issues I hear a lot of buyers talk about is how many phone calls and emails they get.  How do you manage the onslaught of emails, calls, etc that you receive every day?

Jessica:  You just have to stay on top of it. If I miss more than 2 work days, I feel overwhelmed & stressed because I’m not on top of everything. For me, mini vacations verses long vacations are a must.

Nate:  Speaking of time out of the office, how do you feel about the various tradeshows the adult industry puts on?

Jessica:  I think the tradeshows are a great way to see & communicate with our vendors. Unfortunately, I get too busy to attend as many tradeshows as I would like.

Nate:  Yeah, there’s seemingly a trade show every week anymore, I don’t see how people can afford all that travel expense.  Ok, Recent trends say that business is down for adult stores. Are you seeing that, and if so, why do you think that is?

Jessica:  I think business is down everywhere because of the economy. Fairvilla & I believe that pleasure, fun, & fantasies are essentials in life to keep us happy. Sales might be a little slow at times, but we will all make it through these tough times.

Nate:  There’s a lot of news sites out there but not all of them focus on retailers like yourself?  How do you keep informed of adult industry news?

Jessica: I use Xbiz, Adult Store Buyer, Pornnewz.com & of course the AVN.

Nate:  Thanks for the shoutout, I hope we make your job a little bit easier.  Do you think our industry is going in the right direction, or what areas do you think we’re screwing up in?

Jessica:  I do think we’re going in the right direction, but I think the DVD market is flooded with too much of the same material. I think we need fresh ideas to keep the customers coming back for more.
