I attended the first seminar at Storerotica entitled “Diversify Or Die”. My policy is when a bunch of strip club owners tell me to do something “or die”, I do whatever it is they want…because they know people who can come through on that threat there. However, I was surprised that the seminar was only really about novelties. It was all about “diversify the stuff you carry on your shelves.” I’m sorry, but if you don’t already know that, you shouldn’t be here, that should be a common sense thing for retailers.

But the other thing that irked me was that the panel (of very intelligent and nice people) all had a vested interest in pushing their company or brand. So it almost came across to me as a sponsored advertisement more than a seminar. Kinda like something you’d see on TV at 4am that’s trying to act like an educational show. Of course the guy from Sportsheets wants you to carry stuff to tie up your lover….THAT’S WHAT THEY SELL.

What amazes me about these seminars is how rarely they actually feature retailers. I’ve yet to go to a show that featured a retail round-table discussion. If these shows want us to believe they are truly committed to the retailers, how about giving them a voice instead of sitting them in a room where we have to listen to manufacturers drone on for hours. I don’t speak for every retailer, but why do I want to listen to someone who’s never worked in retail tell me what I need to do as a retailer? Let the retailers talk, let them run the seminar and tell the manufacturers to shut up and take notes.
